The Kolkata metropolitan area is spread over 1, km 2 ( sq mi)  :7 and comprises 3 municipal corporations (including Kolkata Municipal Corporation), 39 local municipalities and 24 panchayat samitis , as of 2011 [update] .  :7 The urban agglomeration encompassed 72 cities and 527 towns and villages, as of 2006 [update] .  Suburban areas in the Kolkata metropolitan area incorporate parts of the following districts: North 24 Parganas , South 24 Parganas , Howrah , Hooghly, and Nadia .  :15 Kolkata, which is under the jurisdiction of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation ( KMC), has an area of 185 km 2 (71 sq mi).  The east–west dimension of the city is comparatively narrow, stretching from the Hooghly River in the west to roughly the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass in the east—a span of 9–10 km (– mi).  The north–south distance is greater, and its axis is used to section the city into North, Central, and South Kolkata.
This allowed any English firm to trade with India, unless specifically prohibited by act of parliament, thereby annulling the charter that had been in force for almost 100 years. By an act that was passed in 1698, a new "parallel" East India Company (officially titled the English Company Trading to the East Indies ) was floated under a state-backed indemnity of £2 million. The powerful stockholders of the old company quickly subscribed a sum of £315,000 in the new concern, and dominated the new body. The two companies wrestled with each other for some time, both in England and in India, for a dominant share of the trade.
